Some may take it for granted, but it’s very important to know exactly who is administering your acupuncture treatment. Your practitioner should absolutely be licensed in the state in which he/she is practicing, and should be nationally board certified through NCCAOM. In Illinois you can check the status of your acupuncturist’s license here: https://www.idfpr.com/dpr/licenselookup/default.asp. A little homework really does go a long way in ensuring a safe treatment – if there are any red flags in your search or something just doesn’t seem legit, look elsewhere.
Above all, if at any time someone tries to poke you with toothpicks during an acupuncture session, please leave their “clinic” immediately. But seriously, do make sure that your acupuncturist is using single-use, disposable needles.
As a happy update, this “doctor” has since been apprehended.
